TUMO: Belgium could be inspired by Armenian innovative ideas
On the initiative of the Belgian Deputy André Du Bus and in cooperation with the European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD) and AGBU Europe, Korioun Khatchadourian, the manager of TUMO Stepanakert (Artsakh/Nagorno Karabakh) was in Brussels on 27 March 2018 to present innovative methods developed by TUMO in the domain of education, using advanced technologies.
Founded in Armenia, TUMO is a unique initiative in the field of technological education, aiming to introduce teenagers to creative technologies and boost artistic vocation, offering complimentary extracurricular training to those aged 12-18. This training is based on tailored academic programs at the intersection of art and advanced technologies. Artsakh or Nagorno Karabakh is a landlocked and unrecognized state adjunct to Armenia. Following the Armenian capital, a TUMO center was opened in Stepanakert, Artsakh in order to offer the local youth modern digital education.
Mr. Khatchadourian was invited as a guest speaker at the colloquium on digital technologies with the title “Digital revolution: is it inclusive?” organized by CDH parliamentary group at the “Parlement Francophone Bruxellois” in Brussels.
“Based on the principle that innovation cannot take place without integrating artistic and technological dimensions, TUMO programs target the youth, bringing these two dimensions together. This is one of the cornerstones guaranteeing the success of TUMO in its work with young people,”
stated Mr. Khatchadourian, presenting the activities carried out by TUMO to the attendees of the event, featuring a significant number of political figures and several Belgian experts in the field of education and advanced technologies.
After the colloquium Mr. Khatchadourian had business lunch with deputies of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation Parliament and representatives of the Belgian education sector who showed great interest in the way TUMO combined education and creativity. Following the business lunch, Mr. Khatchadourian had a meeting with Laurent de Briey, the head of staff of the Minister of Education. Inter alia, they touched upon the positive achievements of the model of TUMO, the opening of new centers in a number of cities in Armenia and finally the recent announcement by the Mayor of Paris, concerning the forthcoming opening of TUMO Paris which will mark a new stage in exporting this model. Apart from being a major attraction in Armenia, the innovative concept of TUMO is now sought-after well beyond the borders of Armenia. Following Paris, TUMO could also inspire Brussels in the future, enriching its academic program and propelling creative thinking among the teenagers.
During the visit to the center “MolenGeek” in Molenbeek Brussels, the TUMO delegation also had the opportunity of meeting Belgian representatives of the sector. Th goal of “MolenGeek” is to introduce the Belgian youth to free digital education. The managers of both institutions compared their professional experience.
Belgian deputy André Du Bus concluded: “It was a bold initiative. Theoretically, TUMO could not leave indifferent those involved in education, training and professional inclusion. But how would they react to a project which is overall foreign to them as it evolved in Armenia, a country considered to be in a phase of development. The reactions were unanimous with regard to the innovative nature of TUMO, as we have nothing comparable in Belgium and its relevance taking into account the excellent intertwining of innovative teaching methods in training adults globally in the 21st century.”
AGBU Europe and the EAFJD consider the field of technologies and education, as well as cooperation with the civil society as further opportunities for exchange between Nagorno-Karabakh and Belgium. It is within this framework that Mr. Khatchadourian paid a visit to Belgium.

TUMO : La Belgique peut s’inspirer de l’innovation Arménienne
A l’initiative du député Bruxellois André du Bus et en collaboration avec la Fédération Euro-Arménienne et l’UGAB Europe, le directeur du Centre “TUMO for Creative Technologies” Stepanakert (Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabagh) Korioun Khatchadourian se trouvait à Bruxelles, le Mardi 27 Mars 2018, pour présenter les méthodes pionnières dans le domaine de l’éducation aux nouvelles technologies développées par TUMO.
Né en Arménie, TUMO est une initiative unique dans le secteur de l’éducation technologique. Il a pour but d’initier les adolescents aux technologies créatives et de stimuler les vocations en offrant une formation extra-scolaire gratuite aux 12-18 ans. Cette formation s’appuie sur des programmes pédagogiques personnalisés, à l’intersection des arts et des nouvelles technologies. L’Artsakh ou le Nagorno-Karabagh, est un Etat enclavé et non-reconnu contigu à l’Arménie. Il s’est lui aussi doté, après la capitale arménienne, d’un centre TUMO pour offrir à sa jeunesse une éducation à la mesure des enjeux.
M. Khatchadourian a été invité en tant qu’intervenant au colloque organisé par le groupe CDH au Parlement Francophone Bruxellois autour du numérique intitulé “La révolution numérique : tous inclus ?”.
«Prenant appui sur le constat suivant lequel le champs de l’innovation ne peut se déployer qu’en intégrant une dimension artistique et une dimension technologique, les programmes TUMO s’adressent aux jeunes en intégrant ces deux dimensions. C’est un des éléments fondamentaux du succès de TUMO auprès des jeunes»
a-t-il-expliqué en présentant les activités de TUMO au public présent à l’événement composé par un nombre important de personnalités politiques et plusieurs acteurs belges du monde de l’éducation et de la formation aux nouvelles technologies.
A l’issue du colloque, M. Khatchadourian a participé à un déjeuner de travail avec des députés du Parlement de la Fédération Wallonie Bruxelles et des représentants du secteur éducatif belge qui ont suscité un grand intérêt pour la manière dont TUMO combinait éducation et créativité. Suite au déjeuner, le directeur du centre a rencontré M. Laurent de Briey, chef de Cabinet Education au ministère de l’éducation.
Parmi les sujets discutés, ont été évoqués les résultats enregistrés par le modèle TUMO, l’ouverture de nouveaux centres dans plusieurs autres villes en Arménie et enfin l’annonce récente par la Maire de Paris de l’ouverture prochaine d’un TUMO Paris qui marquera une nouvelle étape dans l’exportation de son modèle.
En plus d’être une attraction majeure en Arménie, le concept novateur de TUMO est désormais convoité au-delà des frontières arméniennes. Après Paris, TUMO pourrait inspirer Bruxelles dans l’avenir afin d’enrichir son programme éducatif et propulser un esprit créatif chez ses adolescents.
Dans la matinée, la délégation de TUMO avait également eu l’opportunité de rencontrer des représentants du secteur en Belgique, comme le site du centre « MolenGeek » basé à Molenbeek, Bruxelles. MolenGeek a pour vocation d’initier gratuitement la jeunesse belge à l’apprentissage du numérique. Les dirigeants des deux institutions ont comparé leurs expériences respectives.
A l’issue de la journée, le député bruxellois André du Bus a réagi en disant : « C’était un pari : TUMO ne peut théoriquement laisser insensible les acteurs de l’éducation, de la formation et de l’insertion professionnelle. Mais comment vont-ils réagir face à un projet très largement étranger puisque développé dans un pays, l’Arménie, considéré plutôt comme en phase de développement. Les réactions furent unanimes quant au caractère novateur de TUMO – il n’existe rien de comparable chez nous -et pertinent-belle intégration des pédagogies innovantes pour former les adultes du monde du XXIème siècle ».
Pour l’UGAB Europe et la Fédération Euro-Arménienne, le domaine de la technologie, de l’éducation et la coopération associative représentent des opportunités supplémentaires pour les échanges entre le Nagorno-Karabagh et la Belgique. C’est donc dans ce cadre-là que s’inscrit la visite de M. Khatchadourian en Belgique.
